The Granolaffluent Reset: How We Do January Without Becoming Insufferable

  • Jan 5
  • 3 min read

A realistic winter reset for people who like the outdoors — and also like comfort.

January has a reputation problem.

It’s not reinvention — it’s friction. Packed spin classes where your favorite bike is suddenly taken by someone who hasn’t been here since last January. Vision board parties you didn’t ask for — including the moment you rediscover last year’s goals and realize they quietly expired by January 20th. The subtle food shaming in the lunchroom when someone brings cake for Dave’s birthday.

Think of it less as a reset and more as a gentle realignment.
Think of it less as a reset and more as a gentle realignment.

Somewhere between the crowded gyms, performative wellness, and the pressure to be “back on track” immediately, January stopped feeling like a fresh start and started feeling like a test. We’re here to propose an alternative.

At Granolaffluent, January isn’t about overhauling your personality. It’s about small recalibrations that make winter feel manageable — even enjoyable. Outdoors, yes. Suffering, no.

Welcome to the Granolaffluent Reset.

January, But Livable

  • We’re not reinventing ourselves this month.

  • We’re not optimizing every minute.

  • And we’re definitely not pretending winter is short.

Instead, January is about easing back in. Getting outside without turning it into a performance. Choosing comfort without guilt. And building routines that don’t collapse by mid-February.

The Granolaffluent January Reset

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

One outdoor habit you’ll actually keep

Daily walks count. Weekend hikes count. Standing outside with a hot drink while pretending you’re “getting fresh air” absolutely counts.

Retire what doesn’t serve you. Upgrade to what does.
Retire what doesn’t serve you. Upgrade to what does.

One comfort upgrade

Better coffee. Warmer socks. A throw blanket that doesn’t itch. This is not excess — it’s infrastructure. (And yes, if that includes the absurdly nice dog backpack your pooch has been eyeing, we support this decision.)

One calendar yes

A day trip. A class you’ve been curious about. A weekend you actually look forward to. January needs something to anchor it.

One calendar no

Anything that requires enthusiasm before 8 a.m. Winter mornings are fragile. Protect them.

One gear swap

Retire what doesn’t serve you. Upgrade what does. This might be boots, gloves, or that jacket you keep convincing yourself is “fine.”

What We’re Not Doing This January

Let’s be clear:

  • No extreme cleanses

  • No cold plunges we secretly hate (unless that's your thing)

  • No buying gear for hobbies we abandon by February

  • No guilt for staying in

If it feels like punishment, it’s not part of the plan.

Fresh air, familiar trails, and no pressure to do more is the goal for January.

Winter Adventures That Still Count

Not every adventure requires packing a bag.

  • A botanical garden visit.

  • A winter walk at the Whitewater Center.

  • A quiet afternoon in a nearby town with good coffee and no agenda.

  • Leaving the house — even briefly — still counts.

  • The bar is intentionally reasonable.

The Real Reset

The goal isn’t to become someone new.

It’s to make winter feel lighter.

If your January includes fresh air, small comforts, and plans you don’t dread, you’re doing it right.

And if your reset includes staying in more than you admit publicly?

You’re still welcome here.
